Staying safe in far-off destinations

With the growing interest in ecotourism and adventure travel, people are jetting off to more remote areas of the world. During these excursions, it is important for travelers to be extra mindful of their safety. Here are few suggestions that might help:
  • Travelers should put their luggage in the trunk of a car or taxi themselves after the driver gets out and pens the door.
    ¡@
  • Request rooms on a lower floor of the hotel, but not the ground floor. Ground rooms are less secure, and rooms above the sixth floor are too high for most conventional firefighting equipment to reach.
    ¡@
  • You should bring a small flashlight with them in case the power goes out in the hotel.
    ¡@
  • Women traveling alone should bring a package of men's boxer shorts with them. If a stranger knocks on the hotel room door, she can throw the package on the bed and turn on the shower to make the visitor think she isn't alone.
    ¡@
  • When leaving the hotel room, travelers should hang ut the "Do not disturb" sign and turn the television on to a station broadcasting in the local language. Unwelcome visitors will think that someone is there and that he or she is a local.
    ¡@
  • Travelers shouldn't use any type of suitcase identification that gives away more information than is necessary.
