Travel needn't be difficult, dangerous, or a chore. If you follow a few simple precepts, it will help make your vacation secure, comfortable, and rewarding. These travel axioms are based on our personal experience and apply to all holiday situations. Share them with your friends.

1 Bring half as many clothes and twice as much money as you think you'll need. You can usually clean your clothes -- or buy a new wardroble -- wherever you go. But acquiring cash on the road, even in these days of credit cards and automated teller machines, isn't nearly so easy.

2 Pay now; argue later. Quick action is the key to getting the airline seat, cruise-ship cabin, rental car, or hotel room you expected. Pay for privilege if you must, and then write a letter of complaint demanding restitution when you get home.

3 Don't go uninsured. Prevention really is the best medicine. Check your homeowner's and automobile policy before you go, and be sure to purchase trip-cancellation and trip-interruption insurance. Medical-evacuation coverage may also be a good idea.

4 Take the road less traveled. When possible, get off the tourist track, search out the places where the locals gather, sample the regional fare, and let serendipity work its magic. Don't be a prisoner of the guidebooks. Travel is about discovery, so start exploring.

5 Don't let your common sense take a holiday. Travelers have no special immunity against crime. Be streetwise, and learn about the local pitfalls. Don't take unnecessary or ill-advised risks. Exercise the same safety precautions you do at home.
