Take a morning flight to Europe, rather than an overnight one. When you arrive late in the day, you'll be able to check into your hotel right away, and start adjusting to the new time zone.

Check the State Department's consular information site for safety tips on your destination (travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html). The crime section will tell you where and how crooks are likely to strike.

Remember that European rental cars are usually smaller than U.S. ones in the same size category. Be sure to book a car big enough to hold everyone -- plus luggage.
See link on [  Rent a Car, European Style ] for more details.

For the test combination of bargain prices and mild weather in southern Europe, go at the beginning or end of the low season, in November or March.

Be patient when you fly out of a European airport. Las year, more than 30 percent of all flights were delayed. The worst were Madrid, Barcelona, and Milan's Malpensa; the best on-time airports were Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Stockholm.
